Hospitaller Knight Costume

An account from a Hospitaller priest in 16th century stated that, as the Order of St John became wealthier, it hired knights to defend its hospitals and pilgrims, and these knights eventually became Hospitallers themselves.

The Knights Hospitaller began as caregivers for pilgrims but evolved into one of the most powerful religious military orders of the medieval world. Their white cross on a black habit came to symbolise both compassion and violence.

Several orders of devout knights emerged, the most famous of which was the Knights Templar, but another well-known order was the Knights Hospitallers. They had one of the longest and most eventful tenures of any militant holy order.

High-ranking non-military brothers included the Conventual Prior - the most senior ecclesiastical figure, the Hospitaller - chief of the hospitals -, and the Treasurer. Below these figures were a vast army of administrators looking after everything from clothes to the funerals of brothers.

Hospitallers, a religious military order that was founded at Jerusalem in the 11th century and that, headquartered in Rome, continues its humanitarian tasks in most parts of the modern world under several slightly different names and jurisdictions.

Founded much earlier than 1113 by Italian merchants, the Hospitallers built a hospital. Here, Benedictine monks helped poor, sick, or injured Christians in Jerusalem or around. Their mission changed after Papal recognition in 1113, becoming a military order like the Templars.
