It is often reported that the jail is overcrowded, and there have been proposals to build another such facility in the eastern suburbs of Mankhurd to ease the load on the jail.
Mumbai Central Prison is also known as Arthur Road Jail. It was built in 1926 and is Mumbai’s largest and oldest prison. The penitentiary was upgraded in 1994 to become a central prison and was given its official name. Nevertheless, it is still more famous as Arthur Road Jail.
