Terry Alan Kath ( – ) was an American guitarist and singer who is best known as a founding member of the rock band Chicago. He played lead guitar and sang lead vocals on many of the band's early hit singles alongside Robert Lamm and Peter Cetera.
Kath was the guitarist and singer in the iconic American rock band Chicago, and he drew praises from several highly-acclaimed musicians, including Ray Charles and Jimi Hendrix. Despite that acclaim, Kath’s name rarely appears in conversations about rock’s most influential guitarists.
Terry Kath was just a week shy of his 32nd birthday when he accidentally killed himself. A singer, songwriter and wildly adventurous guitar player, Kath was the bedrock of Chicago, the daredevil group who had been meshing rock, jazz and classical styles across 11 hit albums since 1969.

One night, Kath jokingly put one of his guns – a 9mm semi-automatic pistol – to his head. Not realizing that what he thought was an empty chamber actually had a bullet left in it, Kath pulled the trigger, and was killed instantly.
In the late 1970s, Kath faced health issues and struggled with drug abuse. Sadly, he died in January 1978 from an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Terry Kath was a skilled American guitarist and singer.
