Clothing is integral to the way that we live, changing with each shift in history and society. Western clothing is the origin of what many of us wear today, and the Kyoto Costume Institute (KCI) systematically collects and preserves outstanding examples of western clothing through the centuries, as well as the documents and other items related to this area of study.
Based on the Kyoto Costume Institute’s fashion collection, in conjunction with contemporary art works, the exhibits encourage us to ponder the various forms of 'Love' that can be seen in relation to fashion.
The KCI dealt with this issue early on by enlisting the cooperation of the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and developing mannequins with technical support from the Nanasai Corporation, a specialty mannequin maker.
