The saint tradition of Maharashtra, known as the Bhakti Movement, played a crucial role in shaping the region’s spiritual and social life. It emerged between the 13th and 17th centuries, focusing on devotion (bhakti) to God, especially in the form of Vitthala or Vithoba of Pandharpur.
The temple's foundation was laid by Saint Dnyaneshwar.The little stone that surrounds the temple is dedicated to Saint Namdeo. He built the temple coutyard this way. The followers of Lord Vishnu, Saint Janardan and Saint Eknath, became the pillars, giving the temple strength. The temple edifice was completed when Saint Tukaram became the top.
