For many students, UIUC has a very good reputation in Illinois and may indeed be their dream school, much as it may be for kids in Computer Science, Physics, Accounting, Civil Engineering and some other top-10 majors.
UIUC is a great school. Yes the acceptance rate it high but that only accounts for the overall acceptance rate. UIUC waitlisted me despite solid academics (SAT score of 1560, IB Score of 40) and a solid extra-curricular and leadership portfolio. Got offer from U-Mich, deferred by U-Penn.
I agree this late EA notification puts UIUC at a competitive disadvantage. This should be an interesting cycle with two important factors likely to result in a lower acceptance rate…first year on common app, and a 600-800 smaller first year class due to overenrolled class of 2025.
UIUC has done a good job elevating/maintaining the desirability of many of their degrees, especially those in the Colleges of Engineering and Business. I agree that Grainger and Gies are getting good outcomes, yet it hasn’t slowed the relentless pace of students leaving the state and is not offset by OOS students coming to Illinois.
We got this email from UIUC titled “In case you need a little laugh” with lot of memes about going to UIUC. A handful of my D22’s classmates who applied to UIUC have gotten it as well while most others didn’t.
