Re: Disable ALL visual effects? With Compiz disabled you are likely using the Metacity Window Manager, which is the GNOME default. If you can still see a shadow under the Windows, then either compiz is still enabled, or you are using another compositing Window manager. To disable some eye candy on Metacity, press alt+f2 and type: Code: gconf-editor

Compiz is a window manager/compositor. We can have both installed but we will only use one or the other after the login screen.

Removing Metacity I've put in a "metacity --replace" command into my startup list to get me around a problem I was having with window decoration.
Re: Gnome fallback Compiz vs Metacity, what's the diff? Metacity runs on 2d, compiz runs on 3d. Metacity can only do so much it terms of added effects.
Re: How to get back from metacity?.. You ar probably using compiz, that is why google earth does this. if you type metacity --replace & instead of metacity --replace , when you close the terminal , it will be at metacity.
