To calculate a percentage based upon a part (X) and a total (Y), divide the value of the part (X) by the total or whole amount (Y). Then, multiply the result by 100. As an example, if you want to find what percentage 15 is of 300, you would divide 15 by 300, resulting in 0.05. Multiplying 0.05 by 100 gives you 5%.
